The Walking Dead Midseason Finale: Zombie Pond Official Teaser

A guilty pleasure of mine, I love the undead, the apocalypse, and the struggle to stay alive. The lyrics said, "Evolve or Die.

In order to survive, a species has to evolve. We did it when we came out of the ocean, and we did it again when we came down from the trees. Feb 23, Nora rated it it was amazing Shelves: What a great mixture of action stuffed zombiecalypse and moving thoughts about the sense of life, why mindkind tries to survive in times of despair.

Keene created a really thrilling horror scenario that overlaps just bloody fights against the undead. Furthermore "Dead sea" discusses the old theories of the archetypes and the existence of a collective subconscious - who is a hero, who is a survivor?

One of the things I admired most about "Dead Sea" is that the narrator is a gay black male named Lamar Reed, who has never shot a gun and has no idea how to survive in nature.

The fact that he is gay and black are treated as facts of his existence and are not present to browbeat the non-progressive segement of the audience.

Keene draws such an interessting picture of mankind by choosing Lamar as the main character. Keene is able to show that even in times of war and ruin, people are small minded and full of cut and dried opinions against black people, gay people and everybody else who is "different".

Lamar Reed is gay and black, but in the end he is just another man fighting with everything he has to stay alive in a world gone to hell.

I absolutely loved it! Mar 24, Michael Fierce rated it really liked it Shelves: Apr 04, Rich rated it really liked it Shelves: Ghoul, was a mixed bag of sorts.

On the other hand, Keene had accomplished some interesting things with that boo Ghoul, was a mixed bag of sorts. On the other hand, Keene had accomplished some interesting things with that book.

His corpse-eating ghoul actually had a character with motivations, and his drive to procreate and create a family brought a touch of skewed humanity to what was an inhuman monster.

Basically, because of this, Ghoul turned out to hardly be a hack and slash novel. Dead Sea features George Romero-esque shamblers, not the demonic, talking, rifle toting, and car driving variety in The Rising or City of the Dead.

First, Keene is writing in the first person point of view, whereas the other two mentioned books favored the third person "he. In short, he lets his readers see inside Lamar more than he has with a lot of other characters.

Quite often, a lot of writers, when writing with the first person "I," end up substituting themselves for their characters.

As a straight, married white man, Keene has tried to write from the perspective of a single gay black man. His Lamar is a man entrenched in a working class ethos, a man who does not, for example, work in the high stakes world of fashion, but rather, before the novel begins, in an auto plant.

Like many people, a sour economy has lead him to being laid off. And that has lead him to drastic measures. Lamar, now, is faced with the daunting task of surviving in a world that is dying around him.

In the process, he finds himself looking out for the welfare of two young kids who had been orphaned by the outbreak. De facto fatherhood has been thrust upon Lamar, and his quest for survival takes on new dimensions.

He tries to learn how to act like a good guardian, thinking of not only of himself, but of the kids, too. This leads to an interesting proposition.

In the process, they hook up with a mob of other survivors and end up on a relic of a coast guard vessel -- one that was meant to be retired as a tourist attraction.

Of course, happy endings are at odds with most works of zombie fiction, as the focus, most times, is survival. Yes, that means the appearance of zombie tuna, sharks, and whales.

Jan 15, Ken Heard rated it liked it. If you want to read the best book ever on zombies and social complaints about prejudism toward blacks, gays and poverty, this one is it.

I found it to be too preachy and schizophrenic. The premise is simple: The narrator, a black gay man in Baltimore, befriends two children and helps them escape the city on a large If you want to read the best book ever on zombies and social complaints about prejudism toward blacks, gays and poverty, this one is it.

The narrator, a black gay man in Baltimore, befriends two children and helps them escape the city on a large boat with others. They battle zombie armies as they stop for supplies and eventually, their own become infected.

The narrator also espouses about social injustices along the way, which seems out of place. Apr 23, Colleen rated it really liked it Shelves: Priest gone insane and helping the zombies?

Hero gets saddled with bratty awful kid, gets rescued by a police officer and a clergyman, and manages to make it to safe haven zone.

That would totally revolutionize the whole zombie genre. Right away the action begins and the fight for survival is do or die.

Rats pour out of the sewars already infected and start infecting humans and the zomification starts. The characters are never typical but at least have sense enough to have a plan.

Or will they end up surrounded by zombies and have to come up with something fast. Ok, this is zombie survival, but I think Brian Keene wrote it in the most likely way possible, given the circumstances.

I learn not expect anything until I turn the last page. Estaba dudando entre 3 o 4 estrellas pero finalmente me he decidido por 4.

Just like this one. The very first review I posted on Amazon was for City of the Dead, but it was a combination review of that book and The Rising, since I had read them back to back.

Although Brian Keene did not introduce me to zombie books his were the first mass market paperbacks that I had read in the sub-genre. Since then I have read and reviewed numerous other titles.

Brian is certainly one of the more polished writers working with the rotting buggers but I have to admit that in some ways his books are ones that I do not connect with as much as I do some of the less "smooth" writers out there.

Dead Sea suffers from some of the same dark characteristics of Mr. There is a certain inevitability to them. We are proceeding to a finish that is somewhat predictable.

The ride can be fun and some of the characters really detailed and entertainting to read about, but because you get a sense that you know where this is all heading it sort of dampens the enthusiasm.

At least for me. There are certain elements that hold in this story that were in the other two books that I have read: They are anything with fur, fins, or wings by the end of the book.

No demons, thankfully, but they crowd around the ever diminishing troop of living characters, assaulting them by land, by sea, and by air.

Keene does a good job giving us a main character that is fairly intriguing. A black gay man as a narrator is certainly a risky proposition but I think he pulls it off fairly well.

The author acknowledges the stereotypes and tries to avoid them without denying their existence. Though it is brought up, it is easy to look past the surface with Lamar and root for him.

Especially when he becomes responsible for two young children and is forced into being a hero to keep them alive. There are some decent secondary characters but a lot of filler bit players that all get to die in variously gruesome ways.

The story is a long chase sequence and moves at a good clip, but as I have mentioned, there is an air of inevitability about the story.

May 07, Dustin Reade rated it it was amazing. Full of intense gore, non-stop action, and amazingly well developed characters everyone has a believable back story , this is one of the finest works of zombie fiction I have so far read.

Occasionally the Protagonist will have a dog or family pet of some kind, but rarely to we get a glimpse of what the other creatures are doing.

It was a little hard to get into. I rolled my eyes when Skye ended up with who she ended up with. It seemed to me that the women in this book endured a lot of abuse, manly towards the end.

This review is void of any major spoilers. Campbell is a great author. The setting of this story takes place on an aircraft carrier the USS NIMITZ and based on how elaborate and detailed he got with the setting you can tell he really did his research for this one.

What Campbell excelled at in the previous book was character development where he seamlessly flows from one individual narrative to the next always keeping you intrigued by the morbid and suspenseful plot.

The same characters that were introduced from the first book make a reappearance as well as a couple new ones. He ties up all of the loose ends from the cliff hanger of the prior book and injects some new perspectives of the world along with it.

Towards the beginning of the book Campbell uses a discussion amongst the survivors to lay down the "rules" of the infection which is just like in the TV series The Walking Dead, where bites guarantee death and reanimation but even if you die through other means you still come back a zombie.

Also introduced in this book is something known as "the slow burn" which opens up a very interesting look at the inner workings of the virus itself.

Overall I did enjoy this book and plan to continue reading the series. The characters have unique and original personalities and very fleshed out back stories.

My personal favorite characters are Skye for her inner fortitude, Carney for being the most well rounded character and although a minor character Maya for her spunk.

The garb of the zombies based on their locations, the layout of the ship, the geographical history of San Francisco itself, all of these are taken into consideration.

And most importantly, while the zombies are the major threat in the series, this book introduces multiple human antagonists just to prove that even in this world some individuals are more dangerous when they are alive as opposed to being zombified.

Another pitfall is the luck aspect. Something you expect the characters to struggle to overcome and the answer to their prayers gets dropped directly into their laps gets to be a puzzling aspect of the story.

My biggest critique of Mr. Campbell is that he is a well-researched and skilled writer but he should leave out the sappiness in his writings.

Especially when every romantic relationship feels identical to one another but with different character names. Jul 06, Colleen rated it it was amazing Shelves: Time for some nautical zombie action!

Some Spoilers I guess One thing that gets me is why not send a person scouting team to check out the ship first? Points to them for at least trying to lure some of the topside zombies off the carrier, but why not just open the doorway they go through and just make a ton of noise for hours?

Lure as many zombies overboard as they can? And then go in? I immediately started the third one. Ship of the Dead is the second book in John L.

As a fan of the first novel, I knew it would be difficult to top. However, Campbell creates a fantastic urban warfare setting with this followup.

The suspense is nonstop and you will certainly find yourself holding your breath on more than one occasion. What follows is a scary, exciting zombie story based mainly at sea.

I have to say of all the zombie books I have read; this has got to be one of my favourites. Although it begins with what seems to be a tried and tested unoriginal zombie novel formula, it suddenly veers off and becomes a very original, refreshing take on a zombie apocalypse.

I found it much thought provoking especially with the added dimension of the zombie virus "jumping" to other animal species and the additional horror this creates.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Absolutely brilliant and if you are a fan of the zombie genre you simply cannot miss this book!

I found myself enjoying this series once I got the fact that these were zombies but possessed bodies. I hate it when zombies do any more than shuffle in large packs but these things drove and used weapons and tactics but that is because they are NOT just mindless virus victims, they are some sort of old type of gods or angels hell bent on the destruction of earth or man or something.

Vague i know but it was a while ago when I read it. If you do read and enjoy it then i would recommend you seek or Dark Hollow by the same writer, it is pretty messed up.

One person found this helpful. It is so fast paced that you rarely have time to recover from one bit of action before something else happens.

In fact the first part of the book is virtually one big chase scene, before the charactors reach a ship and possible safety.

However as always with Keene, it isnt long before it all goes to pot! Highly recommended for all horror fans. I have never read a zombie book before and now I am not sure why that is.

After the first few pages I was beginning to regret purchasing this book however I carried on reading and am so glad I did.

It was actually hard to put it down. The characters are all excellent and the story line had me gripped. Normally with books like these I expect some major holes in the plot or in how the story is played out but this seemed reasonable given the inclusion of zombies that is.

As the options reduced the story got more frenetic and the reality hit home more and more to the chracters. Well worth a read.

I thought this book was fantastic. I have read several Brian Keene books and this was my second fave after Terminal. This book is mega fast paced from beginning to end.

Has an excellent plot and great charactors.
